About the event
After the Army
Saturday, April 25th from 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM
Host: Lynda Leopold
Fort Malden in Amherstburg was built in 1796 to defend the newly created international border. Along with the Navy yard and Commissariat, the military establishments there attracted commerce and settlement, with the eventual development of the town. The decision to create a military presence in this location proved to be a good one, as there were many significant incidents here during the first half of the 19th century, including the War of 1812 and the Rebellion of Upper Canada. (This is well documented at Fort Malden National Historic Site of Canada.)
Once tensions eased and peace ensued however, the British military found itself wishing to decrease its obligations in Amherstburg. Learn some ways that the army found to wind down its active presence and see some of the clues from that transition that remain today.
