About the event
Before It’s Gone: The Lively Legends Behind Our Landmarks
Sunday, April 26th from 1:30 - 2:30 PM
Host: Tammy Dewhirst - Architectural Conservancy Ontario
Windsor‑Essex has a history that refuses to sit quietly — from freedom seekers finding new beginnings, to Wild West bandits dodging justice, to everyday locals making small fortunes rumrunning across the river. These stories live in the buildings, streets, and landscapes that shaped them — but with the sweeping changes brought on by Bill 23, many of these landmarks now face an uncertain future.
This talk explores the colourful characters and surprising tales woven into our heritage, while shining a light on the real risk of losing these places for good. We’ll look at how communities across Ontario are racing to beat the deadline, and what we as advocates are doing — and can still do — to protect this fragile, irreplaceable history before it slips away.
About the host:
Tammy Dewhirst is the President of the Windsor/Essex Branch of the Architectural Conservancy Ontario.
Architectural Conservancy Ontario (ACO) is the oldest heritage advocacy organization in the province. The organization is dedicated to protecting Ontario’s built heritage and cultural landscapes. Through advocacy, education, and community action, ACO works to preserve historic buildings, support local heritage groups, and promote the stories that shape our communities. With branches across the province, ACO helps citizens speak up for threatened places and ensures that the architectural character of Ontario is valued, celebrated, and passed on to future generations.
