About the event

Jane’s Walk Title: On the Move: A History of Transportation in Amherstburg

Saturday, April 25th from 1:00 - 2:00 PM

Host name(s): Meg Reiner (The Marsh Historical Collection)

Explore the ways in which the people of Amherstburg moved around over the years. Situated on an international waterway, with access to rail and road networks, suitable options have long existed for travelling within the town proper, to neighbouring urban centres, and beyond. As improvements were made to infrastructure, and technologies developed, common methods of transportation changed. On land, travel by foot progressed to stagecoaches, to railways and streetcars, to automobiles and buses. On the water, modes of transport ranged from private vessels to ferries and excursion steamers.

We will visit the sites where livery stables once stood, passengers sat in waiting rooms, or prepared for boarding on a dock. Learn about the popular captains, conductors, and drivers who ushered passengers to their destinations, and the entrepreneurs who built businesses around the local travel industry. Your journey through history awaits!
