The Bandshell: A Forgotten Jewel in Jackson Park

The Jackson Park Bandshell is a rare example of mid-twentieth century performance architecture. A landmark treasured by Windsor's Black community and rock and roll music lovers, it suffers from demolition by neglect.

About the event

The Bandshell: A Forgotten Jewel in Jackson Park

Sunday, May 3 from 2:15 - 3:15 PM

Host: Harold Goldin - Ad Hoc Committee to Save the Jackson Park Bandshell

The architectural heritage of the Jackson Park Bandshell is beyond dispute. It is a rare symbol of postwar optimism, technical ingenuity, and cultural investment. It exemplifies the modernist ethos of that era. Among its most notable features are its sculptural clarity, functional elegance and democratic approach to public space.

The cultural heritage value of the place is cherished by descendants of Underground Railroad Freedom Seekers, whose Emancipation Day Celebration, “The Greatest Freedom Show on Earth,” spanned two decades from the mid-1940s to the mid-1960s. You may also know aging rock ‘n’ rollers who fondly recall entertaining large crowds at “Battle of the Bands” concerts on that stage in the 1970s and 1980s.
