About the event
What’s In a Name?
Saturday, April 25: 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Host: Cheryl Hardcastle (Tecumseh Area Historical Society)
The Great Leader of the First Nations Confederacy left a lasting imprint on Canada and his relationship with General Isaac Brock left us a lasting record of Tecumseh's key role in the War of 1812, so much so that major undertakings of the early infrastructure in Windsor-Essex County were named in honour of his memory.
By the time Tecumseh was incorporated as a Town in 1921, the village was already being referred to as Tecumseh mainly due to the train station established here being named the Tecumseh Station in 1854. Some early local publications erroneously referred to ancestors calling the village Ryegate. This will be addressed and corrected in an interesting presentation that will highlight the Great Shawnee Leader Tecumseh as the Town's namesake.
