About the event
Windsor's Wildlife Ecopassage
Sunday, May 3 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM
Host name(s): Laura Foy (Windsor-Essex Native Plant Gardening)
The construction of the Herb Gray Parkway drastically changed Windsor's landscape. Its route traverses one of the most endangered habitat types in North America: tallgrass prairie. The project was a landmark for ecologically-focused construction, protecting, restoring and creating new terrestrial and aquatic habitats across its footprint. In addition to 20 km of multi-use trail, one overpass was built as a dedicated eco-passage, also known as a wildlife overpass.
Spanning 12 lanes over Highway 3 and the 401, Windsor's eco-passage may well be the largest of its kind in all of Canada. Measuring 14,500 sq. m, the size of nine NHL hockey rinks, the eco-passage reconnected Spring Garden with the Oakwood Bush, two natural areas severed by roadways since the 1920s. Join us as we explore the eco-passage, discussing the construction, the habitat and the species it protects.
