John R. Park Homestead Conservation Area (ERCA)

About the walk:

Cemeteries provide a tangible link to people of our past. Join John R. Park Homestead Curator, Kristin Ives, and Cemetery Historian, Ken Turner, in the heart of the historic Iler Settlement for a walk that will take you back in time.

In 1808, Jacob Iler and Elizabeth Snider settled on Lot 37 in Colchester’s Front Concession, starting the Iler Settlement. Learn about the development of the community and experience a guided tour of the Iler Cemetery. Ken Turner will share stories about the various local people of the past and modern cemetery restoration and preservation efforts. Participants will discover how cemeteries provide important, early historical records - making them an irreplaceable part of our cultural heritage.

The Iler Cemetery, specifically, is an important testament to the unique history, development and growth of the area, and this is a special tour you won't want to miss!
